impeachment
   A formal means of removing an individual from public office that could not be enforced through the conventional law courts. Impeachment refers to the charging of a public official, usually an elected politician, with improper conduct in office (usually financial or sexual rather than political) before a duly constituted tribunal, usually the main elected legislative body, prior to removing the official from office if they are found guilty. Impeachment is little known beyond the United States (and little used there), yet the issue of impeachment was raised in August 2004 by a Plaid Cymru MP who announced that he would be attempting to impeach Tony Blair over his handling of issues related to the war against Iraq. His initiative won minimal support in the House of Commons, the mainstream Members of Parliament of both main parties wanting nothing to do with it.
